How we score jobs
Scores start from task-level data. The U.S. Department of Labor's O*NET database breaks every occupation into the specific tasks people do. A 2023 study by researchers at OpenAI and the University of Pennsylvania ("GPTs are GPTs") rated each of those tasks for how much AI could speed it up. We convert the share of exposed tasks into our 1–5 scale, and the "exposed" and "protected" lists in each breakdown are real tasks from that data.
For about 45 of the most searched jobs, our editors adjust the score for things task data doesn't capture, like robotaxis, self-checkout, and hiring trends. AI has improved since the study, so treat every score as a starting point, not a forecast.
A score describes an occupation, not you. Two people with the same title can face very different risk depending on what they actually do all day.
